Pens are one of the first things many new clayers learn to do. I love teaching it to my beginner (usually kids) classes because it's good for boys or girls and you get to make something useful as well as decorative.
Most of these pens are covered in cane ends and pieces (aka "chop 'n' toss), cut into slices and laid on the pen. I came up with the idea for the charms several years ago and while I doubt I was the first to do it, I wasn't aware of anyone else doing it at the time. Now I know of a few other artists who add charms to the ends of their pens but our styles are quite varying, so I don't worry too much about competition. :)
